Simulation and Assessment Integration Framework
0. Platform Baseline (Current State)
The University LMS (Moodle) course areas provided, the platform currently supports Zoom Meetings as an activity, and the H5P activity is enabled (‘New H5P interactive content’ with a full content-type library). These capabilities allow the University to implement interactive learning objects, decision-branches, formative quizzes, and simulation evidence capture inside Moodle.
1. Institutional Evaluation Framework (40/60 Model)
The University adopts a standardized assessment structure of 40% Continuous Assessment and 60% Final Assessment for all Years 1–2 shared-curriculum courses, unless an exception is approved by Academic Affairs and documented in the course syllabus and catalog.
1.1 Continuous Assessment (40%)
- Quizzes (10%)
- RSI / Engagement (5%)
- Assignments / Written Tasks (5%)
- Applied Practice / Simulation / Virtual Lab (20%)
1.2 Final Assessment (60%)
Final assessment patterns are applied consistently using the codes below.
Pattern Code | Final (60%) Structure | When Used |
A | Final Written 50% + Final Practical 10% | Courses with lab/practical or applied skills component. |
B | Final Written 60% (no practical) | Theory/writing courses where no separate practical is required. |
C | Final Project/Portfolio 60% (rubric-based) | Courses where a culminating artifact is more appropriate than an exam. |
Within Continuous Assessment (40%), all courses use the same core categories, including an Applied Practice / Simulation / Virtual Lab component (recommended default: 20%). Simulation work is graded through Moodle activities (H5P, Quiz, Assignment, Workshop) or through evidence submitted in Moodle (e.g., screenshots, PDFs, lab reports, role-play recordings) when an external tool does not return grades automatically.
2. Simulation Tool Packages (100% Coverage)
To ensure full curricular simulation coverage the University defines two implementation packages that work with Moodle and support accreditation expectations for auditability and student identity verification (when applicable).
2.1 First Package
- Moodle H5P suite for interactive learning objects (branching scenarios, quizzes, interactive video) and for capturing simulation evidence.
- Anatomy visualization (e.g., BioDigital Human ) embedded via URL, with Moodle-graded evidence (H5P/Assignment).
- Science virtual labs/simulations (e.g., LabXchange and other open simulations) embedded via URL, with Moodle lab reports and rubrics.
- tatistical tools (e.g., JASP/jamovi) with data-lab assignments, datasets, and reproducible reporting.
- Reference-management workflow (e.g., Zotero) for research-methods coursework (evidence via annotated bibliography and method proposals).
Note: some external tools do not return grades directly to the LMS; in those cases, completion and performance are assessed through Moodle Assignments/Quizzes with rubrics and uploaded evidence.
2.2 Second Package
- All First components, plus selected LTI-integrated virtual labs and simulation tools where higher fidelity and better auditability are required (SSO, grade return, analytics).
- Priority on LTI 1.3/Advantage tools (where available) to support single sign-on, grade return, and activity analytics suitable for accreditation audits.
- Recommended targets for paid tools: A&P 3D courseware; chemistry/microbiology virtual labs; communication/IPE role-play simulations; higher-fidelity pathophysiology and pharmacology case simulations; digital pathology slide review (WSI) platforms; and an educational EHR sandbox for informatics workflows.

5. Moodle Configuration Standards (Accreditation-Ready)
5.1 Standard Course Shell
- Weekly (or Topics) format with a required “Module 0” containing syllabus, CLOs, assessment map, policies, and disclosures.
- Completion tracking enabled for graded activities; activity completion rules aligned to course pacing.
- Consistent naming conventions for weekly modules and activities (Week 1, Week 2, etc.).
- H5P content stored and managed via Content Bank using folder conventions: Program → Year → Term → Course → Week.
5.2 Gradebook Standards (University Policy)
Years 1–2 shared curricula use a standardized gradebook category structure:
- Quizzes (10%)
- RSI/Engagement (5%)
- Assignments (5%)
- Applied Practice/Simulation (20%)
- Final Written (50% or 60% depending on pattern)
- Final Practical (10% where used; Pattern A) / Final Project (Pattern C)
5.3 LTI Governance
- LTI integrations are approved centrally after review of security, privacy, accessibility, and data retention.
- Preference for LTI 1.3/Advantage with SSO and grade return.
- Annual review of vendor performance, uptime, and learner support; contingency plan for tool outages (alternative assignments).
6. Academic Integrity and Assessment Security
The University applies layered integrity controls appropriate to the assessment type, balancing security with authentic learning evidence.
6.1 Core Controls
- Question banks with randomization and item pools for quizzes and finals.
- Time limits, availability windows, and attempt limits configured per assessment.
- Plagiarism detection for written submissions and lab reports; citation and academic writing guidance provided.
- Identity verification and proctoring options used for high-stakes finals as required by program risk assessment.
6.2 Authentic Assessment
- Simulation/case-based work is designed with unique parameters to reduce collusion.
- Rubrics emphasize reasoning, documentation, and decision justification rather than recall alone.
- Practical components require demonstration of applied competence (virtual lab outputs, structured case notes, or recorded skills demonstrations).
7. Accessibility and Learner Support
All digital learning activities must be accessible and supported. Course teams provide alternative formats, captions/transcripts, and assistive-technology compatible materials. Learners have access to academic advising, tutoring, library resources, and technical support.
8. Records Retention and Auditability
The University retains Gradebook records, submissions, rubric scoring, and RSI evidence for audit and accreditation review. Retention periods are defined by institutional policy and aligned to applicable regulatory expectations.
9. Accreditation Readiness Summary
- Standardized 40/60 evaluation policy with documented assessment pattern codes.
- Simulation coverage provides applied evidence, including laboratory competencies where required.
- Moodle standards support traceability and auditable logs for RSI and assessment outcomes.
- Governance procedures ensure compliant adoption of third-party simulation tools.
Implementation Notes (Copy/Paste into Moodle)
- Use Moodle Weekly format: Week 0 (Orientation) + Weeks 1–10.
- Each week includes faculty-initiated RSI (announcement + response/feedback evidence).
- Weekly applied activity should be recorded in Gradebook under the 40% continuous assessment (weekly quizzes, lab worksheets, case analyses, graded discussions).
- Pattern A courses: Final = 50% written + 10% practical (OSPE/virtual stations). Practical skills are practiced weekly; Week 7 includes a graded practical checkpoint.
- Pattern B courses: Final written = 60%. Weekly applied activities remain within the 40% continuous assessment.
- Pattern C courses: Final project/portfolio = 60% with milestone submissions across Weeks 3/6/9 and final submission in Week 10.
- H5P activities should be created in the Content Bank, tagged by Course → Week → CLO, and embedded in the weekly section.
